“No-Art Journal: Rediscovering the Simple Joys of journaling”

Journaling doesn’t require artistic talent or elaborate designs. While social media showcases stunning art journals, the essence of journaling lies in self-expression and reflection, not artistic prowess. For many, the pressure to create visually appealing pages can be overwhelming and counterproductive.

In the process of becoming a journaling hobbyist, I realized that comparing my own journals to those artsy ones was only making me feel down and an unworthy journal keeper. However, I someday realized what a Journal initially was: it was used as a diary, a notebook and a place to write, not to draw. So why would I have to?

Back to Basics

I always suggest everyone to keep a journal. After all, not everyone is a gifted artist or wants his daily journal to be an art journal. Starting your first journals, expecting yourself to come out with the work of Michelangelo on the appearance AND the depths of knowledge of Galileo is just unrealistic. So let’s get back to basic!

A journal’s primary purpose is to capture thoughts, ideas, and experiences. Lined journals offer a structured space for writing, reducing the intimidation of a blank page. This approach allows you to focus on content rather than aesthetics, making journaling more accessible and less daunting.

Benefits of No-Art Journaling:

  1. Reduced pressure to create “Instagram-worthy” pages
  2. Focus on inherent content
  3. Easier to maintain consistency in journaling practice
  4. Suitable for those who prefer writing over visual expression

Getting Started

In my shop, you will find only lined journals – and that’s for a good reason! By offering these kinds of journals, the fear of the blank page is drastically reduced. Isn’t it so much easier to put words onto lines than fill a whole empty page with glorious page designs of wonder? Start simple, go wild later. I might sound boring, but take off the pressure to create something to show-off with and go for something to keep for yourself!

Begin with a simple lined journal and write without judgment. Your journal is a private space for your thoughts, not a showcase for artistic skills. As you become more comfortable, you can explore different journaling styles that suit your needs and preferences.

Remember, the value of journaling lies in the process, not the product. Whether your journal is filled with elaborate artwork or simple text, what matters most is the personal growth and insight you gain from the practice.

Embrace the simplicity of no-art journaling and discover the freedom it offers in self-expression and personal development. You can still enjoy looking at those wonderful, artsy journals on pinterest without the pressure to create a copy of that work (and so do I 🙂

As always, happy journaling!
